In the Book i am reading, The Luckiest Girl by Beverly Cleary, now Katie, Mavis’ daughter is a pain to Shelly the guest. Shelly has found that a friend Hartley in journalison likes her, after they went out to Venice for dounut holes. Shelly doesnt like him like him, just as a friend. Who she really likes is a star basketball player Phillip. After Phillip’s friend Friz told the whole school through the newspaper that Phillip likes Shelly, she got interviewed in the newspaper too, and she told them that she liked Phillip. So later they both ran into eachother and Phillip had asked her if he could come over later for a date. Shellly was very excited, and felt like the luckiest girl there was to be. How could anything get better than this?

Right now, In ‘The Luckiest Girl’, Shelley and Phillip have been going out for awhile going on some dates on the weekends. Now the report cards came out and Shelly got really good grades except for one… Biology, she got a D. Once She told Mavis’ husband, Tom, he mentioned about loosing a basketball player on his team at the school because he flunked Biology. This basketball player happended to be Phillip. So they both talked and Phillip can’t go out with her until he gets his grades up. What will happen next??

I am reading The Luckiest Girl by Beverly Cleary. Now as i finished the book, Shelly has figured that Phillip is better of with her friend Jeanie. Now Shelly is with Hartly, the nice young man in her journalison class who always sat behind her. It was hard saying goodbye at the end of the year, ecpecially to Hartly. They went out for a last time the night before she left, and wrote in eachothers yearbooks. Once home, Shelly read what Hartley wrote. What caught her eye was “I Love You”. It was really love she thought. She really had to leave this love behind and say goodbye to it. Saying goodnight to Katie, Shelly snuck outside and swung on the eucalyptus tree swing for the last time, and hearing the cry of the doves; sad and sweet.

I started reading The Cay it is about a kid named Phillip. It is based on World War II. Phillips mom got so scared because their were Nazi submarines under the island of Coraoso were they lived. So his mom is going to take Phillip to Virginia were they used to live. But when the boat was in the ocean the submarines hit the boat with a torpedo and his mom and him get separated and Phillip end up on a raft with a black guy named Timothy. Phillip had a head ack for about 3 days and then the worst thing happened when Phillip woke up he was blind from looking at the sun to long. The hardest thing to do is to survive with almost no food.

  20. Leah VanDenBosch Said:

Today I am posting about the book the Cay. I am reading it in Reading and you should too. Its about a boy named Philip Enright who lives in Curacao. This is during WWll. During this time the German submarines where attacking. Philip’s mom was worried and wanted to go back to Virginia where they lived before moving to Willemstad,Curacao. Philip’s dad,and expert in oil refining, would not let them he said it was to dangerous. But Mrs. Enright kepp bugging him about it so he gave up and bought Phiplip and Mrs. Enright boat tickets. I know what you are thinking! Why didn’t they just ride on an airplane? Well Mrs. Enright was terrified of flying. Mr. Enright did not go because the oil refinery needed him to stay. About three days after the boat had left Curacao the boat was attcked by a missel from a German submarine. When abondoning the ship Philip and his mother where separated. Philip winds up with being on a raft with Timothy,a black man. Philip was curious about this man. He was ugly, had a bid wide nose, very old, and muscular.Philip was scared. He wasn’t with his mohter,he was with this black stranger, and had this huge bump on the back of his head causing a huge headche. Philip and Timothy become one. But when all was going well Philip woke up to be blind. Timothy said it was because he was looking at the sun to much. Tomothy told Philip a story about a man he knew that went blind for three days for looking at the sun. Well that’s all I read so far. If you want to find out what happens to Philip then go to your local library and check out the book, the Cay.

The Wednesday Wars follows Holling Hoodhood through a school year. Everyone at Camillo Junior High is either Catholic or Jewish—except for Holling Hoodhood. On Wednesday afternoons, the Catholics in Holling’s seventh-grade class go to catechism. The Jewish kids go to Hebrew School…and the school has to decide what to do with Holling. He is assigned to Mrs. Baker’s room. Holling gets the impression that Mrs. Baker hates him because she quizzes him about why he will be in her room on Wednesdays, criticizes his grammar when he answers, gives him extremely complex sentences to diagram in English class, and suggests that he might benefit from sitting in on a sixth-grade math class. He shares his fears about Mrs. Baker with his friends and family, but no one seems overly concerned. Come October, Mrs. Baker sets Holling to more active work: cleaning erasers and the coatroom. One afternoon she orders him to move several trays of cream puffs the school cook had baked. After he does, she has him go outside to clean more erasers, promising Holling a cream puff as a reward if he does a good job. He does—but the chalk dust drifts through an open window to settle on the cream puffs. Holling does not say anything, and the charity members who eat the puffs all get sick. His classmates had hoped he would get them cream puffs, and threaten to kill him if they do not get any. Mrs. Baker then starts a new practice for their Wednesdays: reading Shakespeare. That same month, Mrs. Baker’s two rats, which had been given to her by her husband, escape. At home, Holling’s sister begins a fairly quiet rebellion against their ambitious, conformist father. Everthing goes wrong for Holling. Read to find out his destinty with the horrible Mrs.Baker.

The author of that book Gary Schmidt came to the Lockport Library last year to talk it – he said the part where he was the only one in class with the teacher and that she hated him for it was really true, except that’s the way she acted toward him the whole year!

The book I read is entitled Olive’s Ocean, written by Kevin Henkes. This novel is fiction and is about the life of a young girl named Martha.
The setting takes place mostly at Martha’s grandmother’s house on the beach, but in part of the book, the story takes place at Martha’s house in Wisconsin.
The main characters in the book are Martha, Olive, and Martha’s grandmother. Martha is caring and loving and really enjoys spending time with her grandmother. Her grandmother is loving and is always thinking of things to do and new ideas. They have a special relationship. Olive was a classmate of Martha’s. Olive had no friends at all and she admired Martha. Olive died when a car hit her.
Martha was a totally normal girl until she learned that a girl in her class that she hardly knew died. Olive’s mom brought Martha a page from Olive’s journal saying that she thought Martha was really nice and that she wanted to become a writer. After reading the journal page, Martha wished she had gotten to know Olive better. Olive’s dying made Martha think about life more and not take things for granted.
Martha went to her grandmother’s house the next day with her family. They were staying there for a while. While they were there, Martha spent a lot of time with a boy named Jimmy. Jimmy was making a video called “The World is Not What You Think It Is”. She had a really big crush on him and she thought he had a crush on her, too. She found out he didn’t have a crush on her when he tricked her into kissing him for his movie. Kissing her was really a bet that Jimmy won. Martha was so upset.
I really liked this book. I thought it was fantastic. I think Kevin Henkes did a wonderful job writing it. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read nonstop without putting down the book because this book is so good you won’t be able too.
